Fibromyalgia is a condition where the patient suffers from chronic musculoskeletal pain, loss of sleep, fatigue, and loss of memory. Pharmaceutical drugs for the treatment of fibromyalgia are generally limited to pain killers, muscle relaxants, sleeping aids and anti depressants. However, these medications don’t offer long term benefits and can come with plenty of unpleasant side-effects. Using cannabis for fibromyalgia is a much-researched topic and more and more patients are now resorting to using marijuana products for keeping the painful symptoms at bay.

Cannabis for Fibromyalgia Pain

Although medical cannabis cannot cure the disease, it is known to greatly relieve pain and stiffness associated with the disease. According to a review published in National Academies Press in 2017, ample evidence implies that marijuana can be highly effective in reducing chronic pain in adults. In a 2011 study, 43% of 28 patients of fibromyalgia cited immense pain relief after the use of cannabis and another 43% cited mild pain relief, while the remaining 7% didn’t report any change in their pain symptoms.

CBD and Fibromyalgia Pain

CBD which has remarkable anti inflammatory and pain alleviating properties can be a suitable alternative to opioid prescription drugs used for treating the pain associated with fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, the Food and Drug Administration FDA has still not approved the use of CBD for the treatment of fibromyalgia although the CBD based drug Epidiolex has been approved for treating epilepsy.

Medical Cannabis for Sleep Problems Related to Fibromyalgia

One of the prime advantages of marijuana for fibromyalgia is its sleep-inducing capacity. The NAP review from 2018 suggests that marijuana products can greatly enhance sleep among fibromyalgia patients in the short term. The study from 2011 concluded that 81% of patients using cannabis for fibromyalgia have cited immense relief from sleep disorder.

Medical Cannabis for other Symptoms Related to Fibromyalgia

As of yet, not many researches have been conducted on the use of cannabis for the treatment of other symptoms related to this disease. However, there are various strains of THC rich cannabis which can go a long way in inducing appetite and can, therefore, be safely used to counter nausea and lack of appetite experienced by fibromyalgia patients. Patients who want to avoid the psychoactive effects of cannabis can always go for CBD rich products which come with minimal THC ensuring that you don’t experience any kind of cerebral effects.

CBD Treatment Options

CBD can be used by fibromyalgia patients in many different ways such as:

• Vaping and smoking-

If you want to get immediate relief from muscle aches then smoking or vaping CBD heavy strains is your most effective option. It can reduce pain for at least a span of 3 hours. Direct inhaling of CBD helps to absorb the chemical in your bloodstream very quickly thus offering immediate relief from pain.

• Edibles

Cannabis oil, cannabis butter, and other CBD rich cannabis edibles can also provide a long-lasting effect.

• CBD oil

CBD oil which can be topically applied on your skin is very effective for reducing pain and inflammation. It is also a suitable treatment option for patients with lung conditions who cannot smoke or vape.

Medical marijuana can be safely used for treating fibromyalgia symptoms such as fatigue, joint aches, depression, insomnia, lack of concentration, and general pain.

Although not many researches are available in this field, numerous clinical studies indicate that the use of synthesized THC can show promising results in managing the symptoms of fibromyalgia. CBD is a must for this condition for me. Thankyou do much for this article for strains to try. I can attest the blueberry, tahoe og and cookies strains help along with purple pink crosses and heavy indica, kushes. Tahoe og is a a must for anxiety and muscle spasms. Not a fan of most sativa or headband though.
