So you want to get high. Maybe you want to get really, really high. A joint or two just doesn’t do it anymore, and you want to find a way to get high without coughing up a whole lung.

On the other hand, maybe you don’t want to get really, really high. It’s your first time smoking, and you don’t want to dive into anything that will leave you super paranoid or hallucinating.

Don’t worry, friends. By knowing the difference between cannabis strains, and how to tell how “strong” they are, you can have the experience that you desire. Whether you want to be knocked off your butt or prefer some light giggles, you can find a cannabis strain with the strength that will help you get there.

Looking for something super strong? Keep reading.

What Makes a Cannabis Strain “Strong?”

The alcoholic content in booze makes a drink more or less strong. A vodka with 40% alcohol is certainly going to make you stumble faster than a beer with 5% alcohol.

Think of THC like alcohol in your strains. The higher the THC content, the “stronger” the cannabis will be.

(By the way, you might notice on your box that THCA content, rather than THC, is listed. This is because dry flower has not been decarboxylated yet. Once you light up, the THCA breaks down and becomes THC, which is the stuff that gets you high.)

Back in the day, cannabis strains rarely reached double digits. Now, your average strain of cannabis might have up to 20% THC. When your elders tell you that pot these days is stronger than what they were used to, they’re not lying.

But some cannabis strains go higher than 20%. They may reach 25%, or even 28%. When you get up to 30% THC and higher, you’re reaching legendary levels of THC. These are the strains that we’re after.

Strongest Cannabis Strains

Chiquita Banana

Chiquita Banana is the stuff of legends. This hybrid strain reaches up to 33% THC. You read that right. This child of Banana OG and OG Kush will relax the body, but not sedate it completely. Users generally feel happy and sleepy. Chronic pain patients love this strain for giving them the relief they have been seeking in weaker strains.

Chiquita Banana (or C. Banana) was created by Utopia Farms in California. It’s not available in your friendly neighbourhood dispensary, so you’ll just have to take a roadtrip…

Godfather OG

Godfather OG holds a similar reputation as Chiquita Banana. While many Godfather OG strains hover around 28% THC, some farms have tested their Godfather OG for up to 34% THC. Whoa. It’s a popular indica that takes away all of your worries and puts you right to sleep.

Godfather OG is a legend in Southern California (it’s taken home top prizes at the Los Angeles Cannabis Cup,) but it’s made its way up to the Great White North. We’ve got Godfather OG in budder form, which is a more potent version of cannabis than dry flower. Time to soar to dreamland.

Gorilla Glue #4 (Also Known as Original Glue)

Jay-Z gives Gorilla Glue a shout-out in “Apeshit,” so you know it’s legit. This indica-dominant hybrid is a more accessible strain, whether you live in Southern California or Northern Ontario. Home growers can even buy seeds that will reach 20% THC or higher if they are grown correctly. Farms product GG4 strains that reach up to 30% THC.

GG4 is best known for pain relief and appetite stimulation. If you don’t need to stimulate your appetite, hide your snacks away before smoking. This is some strong stuff.

Bruce Banner

Sativas aren’t typically the strains that make this list. Indicas and hybrids have more of a reputation for packing a punch. Just don’t tell that to Bruce Banner.

He’s big, he’s green, he’s strong – you get the point. Bruce Banner is the most appropriate name for a strain that reaches up to 30%. This strain has a lot of qualities of your typical sativa. After a few puffs, you’ll quickly start to feel the urge to giggle, create, and reach for some snacks.

This is another strain that tends to be more accessible, even with its powerful reputation. It’s a Colorado classic, but you can get high-quality Bruce Banner up in Canada when you order your favourite strains online.

GSC (Aka Girl Scout Cookies)

Yes, it tastes like cookies. But don’t keep reaching over for more unless you really want to fly high. GSC typically reaches past 20% THC, with some strains reaching even higher to 28% THC. While newbies tend to gravitate toward the sweet flavour and fun strain name, it can often backfire as they inhale too much and find themselves losing it.

More experienced stoners, however, really enjoy the uplifting qualities of GSC. It’s a great party strain. You’ll feel happy, bubbly, and ready to interact with whoever is walking through the door. People with social anxiety and chronic pain tend to commit to this single strain.

Not All Products Are the Same Strength

The “strength” of a cannabis strain is not unlike the alcohol content in your favourite booze. While some types of alcohol (like whiskey) are generally stronger than others (like beer,) you’ll also find that strength varies from brand to brand. One type of beer may have 5% alcohol, while the one next to it has 9% alcohol. If you accidentally grab a strong craft beer, you might find yourself calling it a night sooner than you expect.

The same works with marijuana. While certain strains are generally stronger than others, the amount of THC (or THCA) in each product may vary from farm to farm.

One way that you can tell which products are the strongest is through the A-AAAA rating system. Products that are labeled AAAA are higher in quality and typically higher in THC levels. Generally, though, strong strains stay within the same strength. Same with weak strains.

I think that though some strains have a high THC level and are heavy hitters, some strains have a lower THC content, sometimes of 20% but you’ll be definitely high.
I realized I can’t always rely on the AAAA grading system either. I ordered AA buds that were clearly awesome in every way.
I ordered some AAAA that were a disappointment, either because the bud smelled like almost nothing and the high was very average.
    I guess it depends.
I can tell you this, I don’t regret my AAAA Death Bubba,!
Here are the strongest buds I tried from Speed Greens (no special order):
    Death Bubba
    Cannalope
    Bruce Banner
    Girl Scout cookies
    Zombie OG
    Pink Kush
    Master Kush
    Blue Monster
    White Widow

I have tried around 15 different strains from this site in the last two months, and the strongest/ most potent one I have had on here is Violator Kush. Holy crap, it makes me sweat sometimes. Love it when I am super stressed. Death Bubba was next, Pink Bubba was similar to the Death Bubba for potency. This site rocks lol.
